“Sweet are the uses of adversity,
Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,
Wears yet a precious jewel in his head;
And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in every thing”.
—William Shakespeare
The whole world, virtually, is jubilant at the Quit Notice served on Donald J. Trump on 6/7th November, 2020, that his days in the WhiteHouse are numbered. That was the period Pennsylvania flipped to Joe Biden and he scaled the 270 electoral threshold to be the President-elect.
Only very few would realise that we have the Covid-19 pandemic to thank for loosening the evil vice-grip Donald Trump has on the United States of America and vicariously on the whole world at large.
The nail-biting finale, the narrow margin, the fact that Democrats lost seats in the House, their inability to wrestle the Senate from the Republicans even when Donald Trump was acquitted in the Senate after being impeached in the House, are pointers that it took something extraordinary to separate Trump from the White House.
Trump was having Super Spreader Rallies that were always jam-packed. These were rousing and energising his base while delivering his message for them to vote in person on Election Day.
Without the Coronavirus pandemic and the Mail-in balloting which resulted from this, the usual shenanigans of vote suppression would have discouraged many voters, who would have been predominantly Blacks and other minorities from voting.
Donald Trump underrated the magnitude of the tsunami of Mail-in ballots coming his way. The coronavirus which he initially labelled as a hoax finally became his undoing. He indeed believed that with the massive turnout of his base, there was no way he could lose, until the waves of Mail-in ballots started coming ashore.
His patent lack of empathy at the suffering of American, the loss of lives of the poor who were severely impacted by the virus, coupled with his singular focus on his rè-election made him to discountenance Science which could have mitigated the effects of the pandemic and made his re-election a shoo in. Biden couldn’t outshine him on the economy which is a vote winner with Americans any day. Covid became Biden’s campaign focus. The negligence and incompetence in handling the pandemic and the attendant rising death count became the rallying cry, to the exasperation of Donald Trump who would rather talk about everything else but Covid. “Covid! Covid! Covid! was all Biden wants to talk about” Trump told his supporters with derision and annoyance.
In the final analysis, Covid-19 became the undoing of the Trump Presidency which many Americans were willing to live with in spite of Donald Trump’s racism, denial of Science and Climate Change, misogyny and blatant indecent behaviours.
