Fresh from a Retreat for members of Voice of Reason over the weekend where it was decided that more efforts should be given to engaging with stakeholders across the length and breadth of the country on the need for restructuring, Yoruba Koya, a pro-restructuring Yoruba group has organised a delegation to the Honourable Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly and presented him with copies of the Draft Constitution prepared by Voice of Reason and the Ibadan Declaration of 7th September, 2017
This was the first in the series of engagements planned across the Yoruba states to start with – Charity begins at home, and other zones in the nearest future. The delegation was made up of representatives of Yoruba groups like Afenifere, Ataiyese, Yoruba Council of Elders, Voice of Reason and Yoruba Koya, the facilitator of the visit.
The Hon. Speaker was delighted to welcome the delegation to his office in the Lagos House of Assembly complex. Dr. Amos Akingba and Chief Tola Adeniyi took turns to highlight the problems besetting Nigeria as a result of the abnormal constitution we are presently operating. Emphasis was placed on the fact that nobody, no matter how clean or well-intentioned, can operate the present constitution successfully without corruption, wastefulness, insecurity and the attendant mass poverty being experienced in the country presently. Dr. Olufemi Adegoke, the current Chairman of VOR spoke on the reason why his group embarked on the task of producing the Draft Constitution. This is to spell out in clear terms to those who claim they don’t know what Restructuring means.
Otunba Deji Osibogun, the Convener of Yoruba Koya, presented the set of documents earlier mentioned to the Hon. Speaker. The Speaker, in his response thanked members of the delegation for the visit. He informed his audience that the House has always been passing resolutions yearly on restructuring. As a mark of their belief in restructuring, the House passed the law that makes Yoruba the compulsory language for teaching in all Primary Schools in the state, while Yoruba is to be taught in all schools in the state. He promised to spread the gospel to his colleagues in other states. He also promised to work with groups who are ready to bring back the culture of OMOLUABI which has been badly eroded in Yoruba land.
