Buhari administration’s disobedience of Court Orders, an act of lawlessness and a culture of tyranny!
A competent court of jurisdiction has recently ordered the release of Omoyele Sowore on bail. Consistent with a track record of arbitrariness and subversion of the Rule of Law, the DSS, under president Buhari, has defied that order. This is a dangerous affront to constitutional order and a contemptuous defiance of the Rule of Law. Sowore has been charged with some offences, he should be allowed to have his day in court without any abridgment of his constitutional right to liberty.
We note, with regret, that unlawful curtailment of personal liberties as a weapon of repression, has been the handy tactics of the Buhari administration to suppress legitimate dissent. This constitutes an existential danger to the polity, and it is a systematic erosion of democratic rights. We condemn this dangerous trend and direct that Omoyele Sowore should be released forthwith, and have his liberty restored to answer the charges preferred against him in a competent court as prescribed by Law.
We of The Yorùbá Summit Group, have identified many occasions in which the Buhari administration has disobeyed critical orders from the Judiciary, an equal arm of the trio which make up the government in a democracy. We watch as full blown tyranny is gradually creeping on our Nation as if we are back to the dark days of the obnoxious military rule climaxed in the Abacha era. It is frightening and saddening.
The Buhari administration should spare our dear nation further embarrassment by following the path of Reason and Due Process rather than the Iron Fist and the Jackboot that is preferred presently. Adherence to the Rule of Law and The Separation of Powers are the very pillars upon which Democracy can be said to rest, Those should be given pride of place by this administration for us to enjoy stability, peace and prosperity in the Nation.
The BBC recently took the Attorney General to task over the incarceration of Sowore. The whole world watched as Malami squirmed uncomfortably and unable to respond to questions about Buhari’s previous use of the word “Revolution”, and his use of force to terminate a duly elected government
We call on all segments of the polity to join in the task of ensuring the adherence to democratic tendencies, lest the inevitable combustion that follows each and every tyrannical rule, here and elsewhere, happen also to this 5th Republic!
